Foro Olitorio: templi di Giano e di Pietas. Nuove acquisizioni e riflessioni sulla fase repubblicana

Paola Ciancio Rossetto

Abstract

The Forum Holitorium and the three temples of Janus, Iuno Sospita and Spes were an important sector of the southern Campo Marzio. Nowdays they
are less visible because of the construction of the church of San Nicola in Carcere, built on the central temple dedicated to Iuno Sospita. The above mentioned
three temples were demolished for the Augustan constrzuction of the Teatro di Marcello and rebuilt further south east in the first century A.D.
The archaeological investigations carried out under the flooring of the eastern basilica of the Theatre between 1994 and 1999 made it possible to recover
some data on the republican structures. It was identified the rear access stairway of the temple of Janus eliminated during Tiberius’ reconstruction
of the temple as peripteral sine postico. Furthermore a few remains of the temple of Pietas, destroyed for the construction of the Theatre and never rebuilt,
were also found under the Augustan flooring.
