La fontana del Marforio in Campidoglio. Trasformazioni architettoniche e decorative tra XVI e XX secolo

Francesco Paolo Arata

Abstract

Having regard to the notable formal and functional transformations that the Marforio’s fountain has undergone for more than four centuries, it seemed
useful to re-examine, with a summary and at the same time integrative purpose, the complex historical, architectural and decorative problems that have characterized
this emblematic Capitoline monument. All the construction and ornamental phases were taken into consideration, from the imposing original
structure designed by Giacomo della Porta, which included the important ancient works of art (the Marforio’s statue, the marble head of Constantine, the
bronze globe of the Vatican Obelisk), to the significant changes determined in the mid-17th century by the construction of the Palazzo Nuovo and the subsequent
establishment of the Capitoline Museum (1733), with the qualitative late-Baroque intervention of Filippo Barigioni, up to the present day.
