Le indagini archeologiche 1999-2000 nel Giardino Romano in Campidoglio (Roma): i più antichi livelli di frequentazione del Bronzo Recente
Abstract
This paper illustrates the results of excavations conducted in the years 1999 and 2000 in the area of the Giardino Romano of the Palazzo dei Conservatori
in Campidoglio (Rome). The area has yielded an important archaeological sequence from the Bronze Age to the present day, testifying to the continuous
occupation of this portion of the Capitolium since the Late Bronze Age.
Detailed topographical documentation of the earliest frequentation levels and the related materials are here presented. The archaeological evidence
made it possible to clarify how, during the Late Bronze Age. the northeastern slope of the hill was modified to adapt it to the settlement needs. This
marginal area of the settlement, after being first terraced, was subsequently subjected to a first impressive filling action on which a first plan of frequentation
was set up. Here, a series of outdoor activities related to the use of fire were performed. The area was then rearranged by a further backfilling aimed
at a later and different use.
The study of the ceramic finds from these older levels, although they are not very numerous, confirms their attribution within the Subappenninic facies.
