Ceramica attica figurata a Spina: costruzione del quadro di riferimento
Abstract
This paper is a revision, an expansion and an update of the thesis “Imports of Attic pottery in Spina: the
construction of the frame of reference”, that was achieved by the author at the Postgraduate School in Classical Archeology
of the University of Catania, in 2011. In this contribution, the 1242 Attic vases that Beazley records in his lists
for the Etruscan city of Spina are analyzed and the reference framework of the painters, shapes and iconographies of
the vessels is provided. Moreover, the interesting peculiarities of this production in the Etruscan center are highlighted
through a precise comparison too, regarding the shapes and the subjects of the vases, with the Beazley-data of the global
production of Attic pottery and of that of the Athenian domestic market, as well as of imports from all the Adriatic area,
thanks to the precious support of the Center of Greek Ceramography of the University of Catania: the final analysis,
considering the valence of the funerary rites and of the find-spots of the vases too, underlines the extraordinary status
of Spina, compared to the imports of Attic pottery in the entire Mediterranean, shedding new light on the dynamics of
exchanges between the city and the Kerameikòs.
