Abstract

The presence of artificial cavities is a distinctive feature of the Phlegraean landscape, and the high concentration of underground tunnels, both in the past and today, is undoubtedly influenced by the geological nature of the territory.
The present contribution aims to provide a concise overview of the extant knowledge concerning the artificial cavities in the territories of Neapolis, Puteoli and Cumae, extending from the late 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, drawing upon the insights provided in Strabo’s Geography.

Key-words : Strabo, artificial cavities, Phlegrean Fields, Puteoli, Crypta Neapolitana
