STRABONE E IL NEAPOLITAN WAY OF LIFE
Abstract
In his description of Naples Strabo highlights three characteristics of the city: the idleness of life, the passion for sports games, and the existence of numerous thermal baths, which were not fully exploited. Although these were typical elements of Greek life, they were not among the aspects of Greek culture that Strabo appreciated as signs of Hellenic superiority over the Romans. This could be the reason why he shows a certain detachment
in describing the city.
Keywords : Naples, idle life, Sebastà, thermal baths, Hellenic superiority
