LA PRESENZA DEL TESTO DI STRABONE NELLA NAPOLI DELLA PRIMA METÀ DEL CINQUECENTO NEL FONDO DELL’UMANISTA AULO GIANO PARRASIO NELLA BIBLIOTECA DEL MONASTERO AGOSTINIANO DI SAN GIOVANNI A CARBONARA

Abstract

In the sixteenth century Naples, the only library that guaranteed a heritage of a scientific level for the time was that of the Augustinian monastery of San Giovanni a Carbonara. Here the volumes of the humanist Aulo Giano Parrasio (1470-1521) arrived after his death. The inventory of Parrasio’s volumes shows that the humanist possessed two volumes of Strabo and a notebook of Strabo’s extracts. Although Strabo is often cited by Parrasio in his published and unpublished works, at present, only one incunable belonging to Parrasio can be traced. It contains the Latin version of Strabo by Guarino Guarini and Gregorio Tifernate (Bibl. Naz. Napoli S.Q. XVI.H.2, Venice, Vindelinus of Speyer, 1472, ISTC is00794000). Unfortunately, the volume contains only few annotations by Parrasio and does not appear to have been used by the humanist for his works.
