Architettura ed eventi sismici: costruzione e trasformazione del duomo di Orvieto
Abstract
The history of architecture continually addresses issues related to transformation projects connected to consolidations of structural
and masonry works, carried out following damage suffered over time. yis paper highlights the importance of the seismic
history of a territory in the historical-critical knowledge of architectures and their construction and transformation process. ye
previous drafting of a complete chronology of the architectural history of the Orvieto Cathedral led to the identification of
evident chronological coincidences between seismic events and construction phases of the cathedral. yrough the analysis of
the structural geometry and the in-depth study of the main constructional parts of the Orvieto Cathedral, it was also possible
to ascertain the presence of anti-seismic devices introduced following the numerous earthquakes that struck the territory: geometric
compactness, anti-overturning spurs, trusses on brackets, column consolidation projects.
Keywords : Orvieto Cathedral, historical-critical knowledge, earthquakes, anti-seismic devices, structural interventions.
