Sulle tracce del chiostro duecentesco di Casamari: indagine su un’architettura perduta

Guglielmo Villa

Abstract

Despite its apparent homogeneity, the current configuration of the cloister of the Cistercian Abbey of Casamari (Veroli, FR)
does not correspond to that of the Middle Ages, but to the result of a reconstruction carried out in the 18th century by reusing
13th-century architectural elements, due to an unspecified traumatic event. :rough an accurate direct investigation supported
by new digital survey using 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry, this research has made it possible to propose new hypotheses
on the original architecture of the cloister, now lost, and on its plastic sculpture framed in a cultural context of considerable
breadth, ranging from the Cistercian foundations of northern England to Sicily during the Age of Frederick II.

Keywords : Casamari Abbey, cloister, lost medieval architecture, reconstruction, digital humanities.
