Abstract

Churches with two apses spread in both the Eastern and Western worlds over a wide chronological span from the 5th to the
14th century. In Italy, the regions most affected by the phenomenon are Sardinia, Liguria, Lombardy and Piedmont, followed
by Tuscany, Umbria, Apulia and Basilicata; churches with two apses have also been found in Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli
and Marche.
Numerous hypotheses have been formulated on the functions to which the two apses might have been destined. This contribution,
taking into account the complex and multicultural Mediterranean context, aims to deepen the study of churches with two
apses in Sardinia. Starting from the state of the art and the review of the main theories proposed at a national and international
level, and with the aid of direct analyses, particular attention will be paid to the study of historical construction techniques,
to the understanding of the medieval building site, and an attempt will be made to arrive at some temporal, functional and attributive
clarifications.
