Il circuito murario di Brundisium: nuove proposte di lettura e di ricostruzione

Abstract

This study explores questions tied to the reconstruction of the Roman walls of Brundisium (Brindisi). Despite numerous references by ancient authors, there is extremely scant archaeological evidence for the course of the Roman walls, their circuit has been defined using other types of sources, such as historical and modern cartography, indirect archaeological documentation, and geomorphology. The analysis and processing of data collected in a GIS environment allowed us to examine the distribution of archaeological evidence in relation to modern and historical cartography: not only the remains of the ancient walls—extremely scarce and of uncertain interpretation—but also other finds such as burials and necropoleis that may indirectly suggest the course of the circuit. New insights have emerged from the specific analysis of the relationship between archaeological and cartographic data and the morphology of the terrain, clearly highlighted by the DTM available for the area of the Roman city.
