La colonna ad tronchonos e VitruVio

Andrea Arsie

Abstract

The Architectural historiography usually considers the columnae
ad tronchonos as a Vitruvian quotation, referring to
Vitruvius’ interest in the primordial origins of human architecture.
This essay aims to reconsider the degree and conditions of the
Vitruvian significance the arboreal character could properly express,
reflecting on the occasions of dialectic between the shapes of tree-trunk
and columns, especially in early modern architectural literature.
