“Theoretical topics in the works of G. B. Piranesiand the Vitruvian auctoritas”
Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyse the interfaces between
Vitruvius and the theoretical production developed by G. B.
Piranesi (1720-1778). Here, it was selected Piranesian works
produced between the 1740s and the 1760s. With this sample
it is possible to highlight that Piranesi addresses points like: the
relevance of the drawing skills for the architect, the importance of
the ancient remains to understand timeless architectural precepts
and to situate the value of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans. By
facing these themes, Piranesi evokes the auctoritas of the Vitruvian
treatise in different ways, in order to reinforce his own theories.
