THE BASE OF KEPHISODOTOS FROM THE THOLOS OF THE SANCTUARY OF ATHENA PRONAIA AT DELPHI
Abstract
The subject of this study is a base of a lost marble statue, found in the tholos of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia in Delphi. The base bears a
dedication to Athena Pronaia and the signature of a Kephisodotos. Considerations are suggested in favor of the recognition of the sculptor with
Cephisodotus the Elder, the probable father of Praxiteles. The identification of the tholos with the Phylakeion seen by Pausanias in the area in
question is accepted and it is proposed that the base supported the statue of the hero Phylakos.
