IL VESCOVO ARSENIO DI CORFÙ FRA AGIOGRAFIA E STORIA

Abstract

Arsenio fu arcivescovo di Corfù nella prima metà del X secolo. Fu scelto per questa sede dal patriarca Teofilatto, certamente con l’approvazione degli imperatori (Romano I Lecapeno e poi Costantino Profirogenito). Lì esercitò il suo ministero, pienamente consapevole delle sue prerogative, in maniera tale da diventare un modello di esercizio dell’autorità episcopale per i metropoliti isolani delle età successive: la sua fama attraversò il mare e si diffuse in Italia,
specialmente nella Terra d’Otranto, che tradizionalmente manteneva strettissime relazioni con Corfù e l’area epirotica.

Arsenius was archbishop of Corfu in the first half of the 10th century. He was chosen for this seat by the patriarch Theophylact, certainly with the approval of the sovereigns (Romanus I Lecapenus and then Constantine Porphyrogenitus). There he carried out his role, fully aware of his prerogatives, so that he became a model of management of the bishop’s authority for the island metropolitans of the following ages: his fame goes beyond the sea and spreads in Italy,
especially in the Terra d’Otranto, which traditionally maintained very close relations with Corfu and with the Epirotic area.
