Lo spazio artigianale dell’Ospedale Civile SS. Annunziata di Taranto. Gli indicatori di produzione del MArTA - Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto
Abstract
This work presents a summary of the results of the PhD research focused on the craftsman workshops of Taranto and
on the area of the Ospedale Civile SS. Annunziata as case study.
The craftsman workshops of Taranto have been the object of various studies over the years but only a few data are
published, furthermore the hypotheses on productions have so far been advanced on the quantitative data found in
the drains and wells and mostly on the finished products which don’t always constitute evidence of local artisanal
activities.
My research was instead based on the study and the correct consideration of Production Indicators (artisan’s tools,
pottery with defects or over-fired, firing testers, slag and waste, semi-finished products) found in the Ospedale Civile
area and preserved at the MArTA - National Archaeological Museum of Taranto.
So a much more complex productive picture emerged than that advanced in the old studies where the area is indicated
only for the production of common ceramics and coroplastic materials.
In fact numerous new productions have been identified, above all of terracotta and various ceramic classes, but there
are also indicators of metalworking and other products.
The focus of this work will be the presentation and discussion on the Production Indicators coming from the artisan
area of the Ospedale Civile and preserved at the MArTA Museum of Taranto.
