La ceramica decorata “a stuoia” in Abruzzo: un’analisi dei dati editi

Ilenia Fantozzi

Abstract

Decorated pottery “a stuoia”, so called because of its decoration with bundles of crossed parallel lines, is attested in
copious form within the current regional limits of Abruzzo. Scientific literature dates its appearance, and subsequent
spread, to a particularly wide period between the 9th and 14th centuries AD. In order to shed light on distributional
and chronological issues, work was carried out in 2021 to revise and systematise the data deduced from the published
documentation. In this way, an initial map of the distribution of «a stuoia» decorated pottery in the regions of central
Italy was created, filtering the data through a chronological lens in order to identify the phases of dissemination within
the identified areas. The work, which is currently being updated, has also been extended by taking into consideration
hypothetical influences, through the identification of similar productions attested in extra-national contexts.
