Abstract

This paper examines the cultural resonances evoked by the name of a ship depicted in a
wall painting from a Pompeian domus. The graffito inscribed on the vessel reads “Europa”
(CIL IV 11175), a name that recalls the well-known myth and its political and cultural
significance at the time of its representation, while also opening meaningful cultural
perspectives for contemporary Europe.

Keywords : Europe; mythology; Ovid; Pompeian graffiti.
