Abstract

The perusal of some hitherto unpublished documents has made it possible to reconstruct
the steps that led to the publication of the first Italian translation of the fifth volume
of Theodor Mommsen’s Römische Geschichte. This is a groundbreaking study of the
utmost importance which will also be remembered on the occasion of the awarding of
the Nobel Prize in 1902. As well as the German scholar, the other protagonists in this affair
are Augusto Gaudenzi and Ettore De Ruggiero.
